Just before leaving New York, where she had been living, and returning to Japan, she decided to go to Naturita, Colorado, and went ahead with it. What she found there were rock carvings by Native Americans who once lived in the area, "the archetype of America" connected to the pioneering era. The photographs she took as a "young foreigner" in that small rural town shed the mythical image of Colorado and reflect a vibrant America with "landscapes that can only be found there.".
